Except for the matrix gene (RNA 7), all genome segments of NR-3694 are derived from influenza A/WSN/1933 (H1N1) M- (ts51), which is Kilbourne F66 and is available as BEI Resources NR-3687. The other parent of this reassortant is NWS-F (Kilbourne F63; BEI Resources NR-3478). NWS-F is A/NWS/1934 (HA) x A/Rockefeller Institute/5/1957 (NA) (H1N2), and donated the RNA 7 segment from A/Rockefeller Institute/5/1957 (H2N2). NR-3694 is amantadine sensitive and exhibits both filamentous and spherical morphology in electron microscopy. This reassortant is not temperature sensitive.
Note: The HA donor of NWS-F (H1N2) is designated "A/NWS/34" in the Kilbourne Archive. According to Kilbourne, the nomenclature for neurotropic (NWS and WSN) mutants of the original A/Wilson-Smith/1933 (H1N1) human influenza isolate does not usually require the insertion of a date, but if a date is given it should be 1933. Unfortunately, the usage of A/NWS/1933 and A/NWS/1934 is inconsistent, both in the Kilbourne collection and in the literature.
Each vial contains approximately 1 mL of cell lysate and supernatant from Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells (ATCC ? CCL-34) infected with reassortant influenza A virus, A/WSN/1933 (HA, NA) x A/Rockefeller Institute/5/1957 (H1N1).
