The laboratory stock of the original Chinese strain of S. japonicum was later mixed with a second isolate from An-huei Province in 1977 to produce the current Chinese strain. NR-21969 consists of female Swiss-Webster mice obtained from Taconic and exposed to the Chinese strain of S. japonicum. Depending on the species requested, orders may be delayed. Authorization from an institution's animal care and use committee is usually required for these animals to be accepted into a facility. Laboratories should be aware and take caution of possible cercarial exposure following a possible 2-4 month prepatent period after exposure to miracidia (depending on the temperature). BEI Resources recommends consulting personnel in your institution's Occupational Safety and Health office for clearance to receive and maintain the infected snails.
