The details of the isolation and history of influenza A virus, A/FPV/Dutch/1927 (H7N7) are not clear. Although the "Dutch" strain of fowl plague virus (FPV) is reported to have been isolated from a chicken in Indonesia in 1927 or 1928, and transferred to the Central Veterinary Laboratory, Weybridge, Surrey, England via the Netherlands, the fact that there was an outbreak of fowl plague in the Netherlands in 1927 calls this claim into question. In any case, this virus is representative of classical FPV, first identified as influenza A by Sch?fer in 1955. A so-called "Dobson" variant of the Dutch strain is also frequently referenced in the literature. Although it seems likely that all of the FPV strains variously called "Dobson," "Dutch," and "Dobson/Dutch" did, in fact, originate from the same primary isolate, some potentially important genotypic and phenotypic differences have been noted. A review of the information available from the contributor, the literature, and the databases suggests that NR-21657 may well be the Dobson variant.

NR-21657 is a confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI), meeting the criterion of a multi-basic amino acid sequence with a minimum of b-x-b-r (basic-any-basic-arginine) in the hemagglutinin cleavage site.
Each vial contains approximately 1 mL of pooled allantoic fluid from specific-pathogen free (SPF) embryonated chicken eggs infected with influenza A virus, A/FPV/Dutch/1927(H7N7).
